A few weeks ago, Charlene and I received a phone call from the Bakers (a missionary couple that served with me in the Philippines) inviting us to speak at their ward youth conference at Bear Lake. After reviewing our calendar, we realized this would fall the weekend before the annual Ruben Family Bear Lake trip. And since we're going to be there anyway, we just couldn't come up with a good reason to say no.
Yesterday was the devotional day, and we had a wonderful time interacting and getting to know the youth. We spoke to them for about an hour and a half. We shared experiences from our missions, gospel stories from the scriptures, and the doctrine surrounding missionary service. It was a unforgettable experience seeing the youth, and imagining them in a short 2-5 years as the next generations as representatives of Jesus Christ. They will no doubt perform miracles for the Lord in the mission field. The future of this church is in good hands.
Yeah, when we got the call from the Bakers, I thought...Why don't we go on a different vacation instead?!? Trying to create a reason to not be available. Public speaking is not my strong point. But, I realized in my PB it said more than once I would be an example and light that others would want to follow. This is one of those times where I can be an influence. Adam is also an outstanding motivating speaker, and I knew he would LOVE the opportunity. I prayed that at least one youth would be able to take something away from the talk. And after hearing our talks, one told a leader that they have been undecided and decided as they heard the talks, that they need to go on a mission. It was so neat to know that. I loved the experience and I see many more opportunities in the future. Like I said...public speaking is not my strong point....so I need A LOT of practice.
We've been staying with the bakers this week, they've been the best hosts ever! We also got to spend some time with Adam's newly returned mission President and his wife. Its been a fun weekend and tomorrow we start our Ruben Bear Lake trip! Vacation at last.
